Why consistent measurements matter
Tree dimensions are easily misunderstood when nurseries measure from different points or describe natural forms informally. A useful record shows the method, date and tree ID alongside photographs that visibly support the figures.
Overall height
State the lower measuring point and whether the figure includes the root ball, container or raised soil level. For prepared trees, record whether crown tying or pruning is expected to change the shipping height.
Crown spread on two axes
Measure the widest canopy direction and a second direction at right angles. This reveals asymmetry that one crown-width figure can hide. Link the measurements to front, side and rear photographs.
Clear-trunk height
Where circulation, sightlines or architectural clearance matter, measure from the agreed lower point to the first significant branch or lower canopy line. Define the method because irregular crowns can make this value ambiguous.
Trunk and aerial-root measurement
State whether the figure is a circumference, diameter or combined visual spread, and record the height above the reference point where it was taken. Complex multi-trunk and aerial-root forms may require photographs with a scale reference instead of a single number.
Root-ball or container dimensions
Record width, length where non-circular, and depth or height. Distinguish current nursery dimensions from the final prepared dimensions expected for movement and loading.
Prepared transport dimensions
Crown tying, selective pruning, wrapping and root preparation can change the transport profile. Keep current-tree measurements and prepared measurements as separate fields so container assumptions remain traceable.
Individual trees versus wholesale batches
Project specimens normally receive an individual ID and complete measurement set. Wholesale supply may use defined size bands, representative samples and agreed tolerance rules. The buyer should know which approval method applies before selections begin.
Minimum evidence set
- Unique tree or batch ID
- Measurement date
- Full-tree front, rear and side views
- Scale reference or measuring tool visible where practical
- Height and crown spread on two axes
- Trunk and root detail
- Current and prepared root dimensions
- Notes on planned pruning, tying or substitutions
